Passion is important but remember value is everything
Repeatedly, you would hear people say you should be passionate about what you do. And as much as that is true for reasons we all know too well, there is an attribute which is everything, and that is 'value.' But before I bore you with my theories let me illustrate with a story of a company I think we are all familiar with, Apple Inc.
The company currently has a $1 trillion market valuation. The company started at Steve Jobs's parent's garage and it was his friend steve Wozniak who was passionate about electric boards experimenting with most of the boards he was building, who build the board of their first computer, and the rest is history as they say.
Now it is very easy to forget that a while ago that same company was facing bankruptcy. And there so many reasons as to why the company was heading to that ending but I want to stick to one, to illustrate my point.
One of the founders the late Steve Jobs was fired from the company in 1985 and by 1997 the company had only 90 days of cash in the account. Fortunately, he came back, and 8 weeks in, he had a meeting with the employees and he asked one question that changed the companies trajectory.
The future for the company looked bleak, a handful of people gave it a chance to survive leave alone to go on and become one of the first American publicly-traded companies to hit a $1 trillion market valuation. In the meeting, Steve would give a passionate message and raise a profound question that would inspire his team to not only dig themselves out of bankruptcy, build one of the best inventions in history, but also, change how we view personal computing.
In case you are wondering the question was " who is Apple and where do we fit in this world?" He would articulate his answer to that question as follows:
"What we are about is not making boxes for people to get their jobs done although we do that well. But Apple is about something more than that. Apple's core value is that we believe people with passion can change the world for the better. Those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones who actually do."
So what is the point of all this story, I think the story teaches us that people with passion are vital in anything to prosper but more importantly, He taught us that we should ask important, meaningful questions. My hope is that perhaps you will come out of the story inspired to not only look at yourself personally but how you would use your passion to improve this world that is in dire need of you and me.
But hey, I am not suggesting you can build a $1 trillion company by asking the right questions I am suggesting that you can find insightful answers that can play a major role in how a business communicates, and most importantly in how as individuals we can be able to find our core values.
As I close remember this what you learn from others is important but what you teach yourself is the ultimate importance. As always thanks for reading, if you have any comments, suggestions, or questions feel free to leave them in the comment section below.
